Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name George Eliot, was one of the leading English novelists, poets, and writers of the Victorian era.

Although female authors were published under their own name at this time, she wanted to escape the stereotype of women's writing being limited to lighthearted romances.

The pressures of modern life make it hard to stop, even for a moment.

We are judged by the speed in which we respond. We are always available, always online, and always contactable.

Taking a break, even for a few seconds, can have hugely positive effects on our mental health and well-being.

Stopping to pause allows us time to reflect and to be present in the moment.

Inspirational words from the pioneering aviator, Amy Johnson.

On May 5th, 1930, Johnson sealed her place in the history books, becoming the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia.

This 11,000 mile journey was the first of several record-breaking flights.

26 year old Amy and her plane, a second-hand Gypsy Moth called Jason, took off from Croydon Aerodrome with no crowds and no fuss. No one knew who she was.

The journey was full of danger. She had no radio contact with the ground, used only a compass for navigation, and had several dramatic incidents along the way, including almost flying into a mountain range .

Amy landed in Australia to a hero's welcome. Congratulations came from around the world, from royalty and celebrities. The British press called her 'The Queen of the Air'.

More than one million people lined the streets of London as she was driven through the city on her return home.

Fast cars, modelling, and a turbulent marriage followed, Johnson became a living legend. Her life was cut short, aged just 37, when her plane crashed into the Thames estuary. Her body was never recovered, and many stories surround her death.

Her plane can be seen in London's Science Museum, and while Croydon Airport has long since closed, her story is fondly remembered in the Heritage Museum at the visitor centre.

Happy May Day to the Ford Learning community 🎊

May Day traditionally celebrates the beginning summer. It's a European festival that dates back nearly a thousand years.

It's often marked with flowers, festivals, and Maypole dancing and takes us back nostalgically to a simpler life.

In the UK and Ireland, the holiday probably began on the Celtic holiday called 'Beltane', which marked the changing of the seasons.

In some towns and villages, you can still attend the May Queen Festival, where a local girl is chosen to lead the celebrations, and parades and fetes are a place for people to gather and enjoy the festivities.

Some other traditions include dressing up as the Green Man to symbolise the new cycle of growth that happens every spring. Morris dancing, an ancient form of folk dance. Gathering flowers for your friends to wear and waking up early to wash your face in the morning dew.
